For our entire 21 year history, Literary Mama has been run by volunteers. In 2019, we decided to expand our vision, becoming a nonprofit. We created a strategic plan, recruited board members, and added more initiatives. It was a great experiment, and we learned a lot, but ultimately it became clear we didn’t have the bandwidth to sustain this vision.
We have, therefore, disbanded the nonprofit and are taking a brief break to regroup. We are going back to what we have always done best: supporting mamas, and figuring out how to support mamas better: not only the mamas who submit work to the journal, but our staff, too, by addressing labor and equity issues across the journal at large.
Writers: we plan to reopen for submissions by September 2024, and we can’t wait to read your latest work.
Donors: please know that we have used any remaining funds from our nonprofit to maintain the LM website, facilitate the publication of our second anthology, and support parent writers at two New York State residencies: Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and SPACE on Ryder Farm. We are grateful for your support.
While the magazine is on hold, our podcast, This Mama Is Lit!, continues to publish interviews with some of your favorite mama writers. Listen on Substack or your preferred app.
In gratitude for your support, contributions, and readership,
Amanda Fields
